Ter gelegenheid van Andrea Arnolds nieuwste film BIRD organiseren we een retrospectieve in de reeks SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS. Arnold, één van Groot-Brittannië’s meest geprezen filmmakers, bouwt sinds haar kortfilms MILK, DOG en het Oscarwinnende WASP aan een uitgesproken eigen oeuvre. In een sociaal-realistische stijl focust ze op alledaagse details en authentieke personageontwikkeling van mensen die leven aan de rand van de maatschappij, los van sentiment. Met een voorliefde voor improvisatie en werken met onbekende acteurs viert Arnold de chaos op de set en in haar werk. Of noemen we dat net ‘movie magic’?

To celebrate Andrea Arnold's newest film BIRD, we organize a retrospective in our programme SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS. Arnold, one of Great Britain's most renowned filmmakers, builds a strong oeuvre since her short films MILK, DOG and Oscar-winning WASP. With a socially-realistic style, she focuses on daily details and authentic character development of people living at the edge of society, detached from sentiment. With a preference for improvisation and working with unknown actors, Arnold celebrates the chaos on the set and in her works. Or is that what we call 'movie magic'?
