In 1988, kort voor de première van LET’S GET LOST, viel Chet Baker uit het raam van zijn hotelkamer in Amsterdam. Een ongeluk, aldus de Nederlandse autoriteiten. De iconische trompettist was toen al aan lager wal geraakt door zijn drugsverslaving. Ooit was hij de posterboy van westcoastjazz, een knappe jongeman die zo zou kunnen dubbelen voor een nonchalante, mysterieuze filmster als James Dean.

Niet gek dus dat dit sfeervolle zwart-witportret gemaakt werd door Bruce Weber, de modefotograaf die bekend werd door zijn verleidelijke shoots voor Calvin Klein en Abercrombie & Fitch. Hij moet gefascineerd zijn geweest door de toen afgeleefde Baker. Hij documenteerde ‘s mans laatste levensjaar, en doorspekt zijn film met treffende terugblikken op het turbulente leven van de iconische muzikant achter klassiekers als My Funny Valentine en natuurlijk Let’s Get Lost, de titeltrack van deze Oscargenomineerde muziekdocumentaire.

In 1988, shortly before the premiere of LET’S GET LOST, Chet Baker fell from the window of his Amsterdam hotel room. An accident, according to Dutch authorities. By then, the iconic trumpeter had long succumbed to his drug addiction. Once the golden boy of West Coast jazz, he had the looks of a brooding film star—someone who could have easily passed for James Dean.

It’s no surprise that this atmospheric black-and-white portrait was created by Bruce Weber, the fashion photographer renowned for his seductive shoots for Calvin Klein and Abercrombie & Fitch. He must have been captivated by the worn-down Baker, documenting the musician’s final year while interweaving poignant flashbacks to the turbulent life of the artist behind classics like My Funny Valentine and, of course, Let’s Get Lost, the title track of this Oscar-nominated music documentary.
