Overdag kijkt hij pornofilms in groezelige cinema’s en jaagt hij zich op over de staat van de wereld, en vooral dan New York: de beerput van die wereld. Travis is een eenzaat met sterke opinies over wat er goed en slecht is aan de mensheid. Wanneer hij campagnemedewerkster Betsy ontmoet, wordt zij voor hem een lichtje in de duisternis. Na een incident, raakt Travis ervan overtuigd dat hij actie moet ondernemen om van de wereld een betere plek te maken.

TAXI DRIVER vat in een cinematografisch hoogstandje wat onbegrip, eenzaamheid en isolatie kunnen doen met een mens. Robert De Niro is ongenaakbaar als Travis Bickle en Jodie Foster werkte in op Amerika’s geweten als de 12-jarige kindprostituee Iris. Met een origineel scenario van Paul Schrader en in de handen van Martin Scorsese werd de film van bij de release geklasseerd als een moderne klassieker. Echter wel een klassieker die instaat voor een ongemakkelijke kijkbeurt. Filmcriticus Roger Ebert vat die kijkervaring goed samen: “TAXI DRIVER is a hell, from the opening shot of a cab emerging from stygian clouds of steam to the climactic killing scene in which the camera finally looks straight down. Scorsese wanted to look away from Travis's rejection; we almost want to look away from his life. But he's there, all right, and he’s suffering.” 

Het is moeilijk te geloven, want de film blijft even relevant als bij zijn release, maar TAXI DRIVER viert in 2026 zijn 50ste verjaardag.

Film- en kunsthistoricus en docent Ruben Damasure (UAntwerpen) geeft op 5 mei voor de film een lezing: 'New Hollywood'. Deze lezing om 17u00 is inbegrepen in de prijs van het filmticket.

After an incident, Travis becomes convinced that he has to take action to make the world a better place.

TAXI DRIVER captures in a cinematographic masterpiece what ignorance, loneliness and isolation can do to a person. Robert De Niro is untouchable as Travis Bickle and Jodie Foster acted on America’s conscience as the 12-year-old child prostitute Iris. With an original screenplay by Paul Schrader, and in the hands of Martin Scorsese the film was classified as a modern classic from its release. Albeit a classic guaranteeing an uncomfortable watch. Film critic Roger Ebert summed it up perfectly: “TAXI DRIVER is a hell, from the opening shot of a cab emerging from stygian clouds of steam to the climactic killing scene in which the camera finally looks straight down. Scorsese wanted to look away from Travis's rejection; we almost want to look away from his life. But he's there, all right, and he’s suffering.”
