Herinner je je nog je kinderdroom ‘later word ik…’? Sommigen volharden in die droom. In POLITE SOCIETY is dat inspirerende doorzetter Ria Khan, een Brits-Pakistaanse wannabe stuntvrouw. Ria creëert filmpjes van haar martial arts training onder haar alter ego ‘The Fury’. Haar oudere zus Lena steunt die droom en is haar trouwste supporter. Op school maakt Ria deel uit van een onafscheidelijk trio met vriendinnen Clara en Alba.

Maar, zoals elke heldin weet: een nemesis is nooit veraf, ook niet voor Ria. Ze is ervan overtuigd dat ze Lena moet redden van haar aankomende huwelijk. Lena staat op het punt om na een korte romance te trouwen met de rijke – en op het eerste gezicht perfecte – Salim en samen met hem naar Singapore te verhuizen voor zijn carrière als succesvolle geneticus. In de openingsscène van THE VILLAINESS treden we heel letterlijk in de voetsporen van de vrouwelijke huurmoordenaar uit de titel. Vanuit het first-person perspectief volgen we onze tot nu toe nog onzichtbare protagonist. Haar identiteit ontdekken we pas wanneer ze in een spiegel kijkt. Wat een manier om een personage te introduceren en de toon te zetten voor een actiethriller, die bij zijn vertoning tijdens het Cannes Filmfestival onthaald werd op een vier minuten durende staande ovatie. De ‘slechterik’ uit de titel is Sook-hee, een vrouw die als jong meisje getuige was van de moord op haar vader en de rest van haar leven wijdt aan het wreken van zijn dood. Wannneer Sook-hee een donker geheim uit haar verleden ontdekt, begint ze aan een epische wraaktocht. “Let me show you what you’ve made me into.” Weinig zinnen uit de filmgeschiedenis zijn meer onheilspellend.

De vechtscènes zijn tot in de puntjes gechoreografeerd en lijken praktisch van het scherm te spatten. Dat heeft ook te maken met de camerakeuze van regisseur Buyng-gil Jung die op bepaalde momenten hele kleine camera’s gebruikt, die nooit eerder gehanteerd werden in cinema, om de indruk te wekken dat de kijker alles uit de eerste hand ervaart.

Vijf jaar rondlopen alsof je net geëlektrocuteerd bent? Dat waren de jaren 1970 voor Jack Nance, die de hoofdrol speelt in dit grensverleggende debuut van David Lynch en jarenlang de explosieve haarsnit aanhield om de film te kunnen maken. Walking around for five years as if you had just been electrocuted? Those were the 1970s for Jack Nance, who stars in this groundbreaking debut from David Lynch and kept the explosive haircut for years to make the film. Indeed, due to money problems, the production of ERASERHEAD dragged on endlessly, making it a minor miracle that this masterpiece, shot in black-and-white, about Henry struggling to care for his deformed child in a desolate industrial town, finally finished.

A comical western… Is this a movie genre we’re waiting for? It is when Jane Fonda plays the outlaw from the title and Lee Marvin dusts off his acting chops to play a dual role as drunkard Shelleen and villain Shaw. According to renowned film critic Roger Ebert CAT BALLOU is the western comedy to surpass all others. The premise of the film is quite simple: school teacher Catherine turns into the fearless outlaw and gang leader Cat Ballou to avenge her father’s murder.

The comedy parts are accompanied by funny music. Minstrels Nat King Cole (in his last project) and Stubby Kaye welcome the audience with their banjos performing The Ballad of Cat Ballou as a Greek chorus. After that first scene, we travel back in time for the origin story of Cat. Lee Marvin appears on the screen as town-drunk Kid Shelleen, who quite literally falls off the wagon. Marvin was previously known for his serious roles (THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE), but the audience was so pleased to see him in a comedic role that he surprisingly – but rightly so – won the Academy Award for Best Actor for CAT BALLOU. Jane Fonda had the difficult task of playing the only serious character amongst a bunch of unhinged men. But Fonda manages to combine the naïveté of her school teacher with the impressive perseverance of the outlaw Cat.

Marvin was voorheen vooral gekend voor zijn serieuze rollen (THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE), maar het publiek was zo verheugd om hem eindelijk in een komische rol te zien dat hij verbazend genoeg – maar verdiend – de Oscar voor Beste Acteur won voor CAT BALLOU. Jane Fonda had de moeilijke taak om het enige serieuze personage te spelen, naast een hoop losgeslagen mannen. Maar Fonda slaagt erin om de naïviteit van haar schooljuf te combineren met het indrukwekkende doorzettingsvermogen van haar outlaw.

A comical western… Is this a movie genre we’re waiting for? It is when Jane Fonda plays the outlaw from the title and Lee Marvin dusts off his acting chops to play a dual role as drunkard Shelleen and villain Shaw. According to renowned film critic Roger Ebert CAT BALLOU is the western comedy to surpass all others. The premise of the film is quite simple: school teacher Catherine turns into the fearless outlaw and gang leader Cat Ballou to avenge her father’s murder.

The comedy parts are accompanied by funny music. Minstrels Nat King Cole (in his last project) and Stubby Kaye welcome the audience with their banjos performing The Ballad of Cat Ballou as a Greek chorus. After that first scene, we travel back in time for the origin story of Cat. Lee Marvin appears on the screen as town-drunk Kid Shelleen, who quite literally falls off the wagon. Marvin was previously known for his serious roles (THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE), but the audience was so pleased to see him in a comedic role that he surprisingly – but rightly so – won the Academy Award for Best Actor for CAT BALLOU. Jane Fonda had the difficult task of playing the only serious character amongst a bunch of unhinged men. But Fonda manages to combine the naïveté of her school teacher with the impressive perseverance of the outlaw Cat.
