THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?

Tijdens de depressiejaren in het interbellum wordt een dansmarathon georganiseerd in Hollywood. Wanhopig van armoede gaan de deelnemers tot het uiterste om te winnen, of het nu gaat om het prijsgeld of om de aandacht van de ceremoniemeester die op zoek is naar de nieuwste ster. De uitputtende competitie is opgezet voor het vermaak van een paar verveelde toeschouwers en speelt meedogenloos in op de ontreddering van de deelnemers. 
THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON’T THEY? is een adaptatie van Horace McCoys gelijknamige roman. Regisseur Sydney Pollack gebruikt de dansmarathon, een rage uit de jaren 30, als centrale setting voor zijn epos over uitputting en zinloosheid in een tijd van drukkende armoede. Jane Fonda kon voor haar rol rekenen op haar eerste Oscarnominatie voor Beste Actrice.
