“The baddest one-chick hit-squad that ever hit town!” Dat is Pam Griers Coffy in één zin. Griers hoofdrol in COFFY betekende de doorbraak in haar carrière, na een rits bijrollen in exploitatieve gevangenisdrama’s. Haar energetische on-screen persona, met de onbevreesde lichamelijkheid die daarbij hoort, neemt een plek in binnen de Amerikaanse cinema van de jaren '70, waar meer geweld en naaktscènes werden toegelaten dan ooit tevoren. Regisseur Jack Hill werd niet voor niks door Quentin Tarantino de “Howard Hawks of exploitation filmmaking” gelabeld.

COFFY barst van de expliciete scènes, erotiek en bloederige actie, maar dat allemaal vanuit een rechtvaardige drijfveer: verpleegster Flower Child ‘Coffy’ Coffin ziet in haar professionele leven dagelijks de schade die de heroïneplaag in haar stad aanricht. Wanneer haar zus ook het slachtoffer wordt van haar drugsverslaving, wordt het persoonlijk. Coffy zwerft ’s nachts door de stad op zoek naar bloederige gerechtigheid.

Na de release van COFFY domineerde Pam Grier gedurende de rest van de jaren '70 als femme fatale en icoon van de Blaxploitation actiehits. Het populaire low-budget filmgenre met een Afrikaans-Amerikaanse cast en duidelijke genrecodes bracht een nieuw soort held en heldin op de voorgrond. “My movies featured women claiming the right to fight back, which previously had been out of the question,” schrijft Grier in haar autobiografie. “To me, what really stood out in the genre was women of colour acting like heroes, street-smart women who were proud of who they were. They were far more aggressive and progressive than the Hollywood stereotypes.” In COFFY vecht Grier als een vigilante tegen corruptie en de drugsmaffia: geweld als inspirerend verzet. Eén van de mensen die ze inspireerde, was regisseur Quentin Tarantino, een toegewijde connaisseur van Griers carrière, die haar liet namedroppen door Tim Roth en Chris Penn in RESERVOIR DOGS. En die Grier later castte als de onvergetelijke JACKIE BROWN (ook op ons programma!).

Grier’s starring role in COFFY was the breakthrough her career needed, after a string of supporting roles in exploitation prison flicks. Her energetic on-screen persona, with the fearless physicality that comes with it, occupies a spot in American cinema of the seventies, where violence and nudity were featured more than ever before. Director Jack Hill was crowned the “Howard Hawks of exploitation cinema” by Quentin Tarantino.

COFFY bursts with explicit scenes, eroticism and bloody action. But all of this is triggered by a sense of justice: nurse Flower Child ‘Coffy’ Coffin is faced with the damages done by the heroin scourge in the city in her daily professional life. When her sister becomes the latest victim of the inner city drug dealers, things become personal. Coffy roams the streets at night searching for violent justice.
