Wanneer een 17-jarig meisje vermoord wordt teruggevonden in Alaska, vervoegen twee detectives uit L.A., Will Dormer en Hap Eckhart, het onderzoek als een gunst aan de plaatselijke politiechef. Dormer en Eckhart worden in L.A. onderworpen aan een professioneel onderzoek en vluchten elk op hun manier voor hun demonen. Dormer lijdt aan insomnia en daaraan gelinkte waanideeën, die versterkt worden wanneer hij gecontacteerd wordt door de moordenaar.

Robin Williams werd in INSOMNIA – een remake van de gelijknamige Noorse film uit 1997 – gecast als villain, wat ver verwijderd is van de komische rollen die hem bekend maakten. Williams staat in deze psychologische thriller tegenover sterren als Al Pacino en Hilary Swank. Filmcriticus Roger Ebert prijst die casting:

“Pacino and Williams are very good together. Their scenes work because Pacino’s character, in regarding Williams, is forced to look at a mirror of his own self-deception. The two faces are a study in contrasts. Pacino is lined, weary, dark circles under his eyes, his jaw slack with fatigue. Williams has the smooth, open face of a true believer, a man convinced of his own case. (…) Williams reminds us that he is a considerable dramatic talent–and that (…) his serious films are almost always good ones.”

When a 17-year-old girl is found murdered in Alaska, two L.A. detectives, Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart, join the investigation as a favour to the local police chief. Dormer and Eckhart are subjected in L.A. to a professional investigation and each flees in their way for their demons. Dormer suffers from insomnia and associated delusions, which are enhanced when he gets contacted by the murderer.

Robin Williams was cast as a villain in INSOMNIA – a remake of the eponymous Norse film from 1997 – something far from the comical roles which made him famous. In this psychological thriller, Williams is starring alongside stars as Al Pacino and Hilary Swank.
