MOTHER van Vsevolod Pudovkin is een krachtig voorbeeld van Sovjet-cinema, waarin de Russische cineast zijn gevoel voor montage en symboliek meesterlijk toont. Based on Maxim Gorky’s novel, this film is the first in Pudovkin’s revolutionary trilogy and depicts a mother, Pelageya, navigating the Russian Revolution of 1905. As her abusive husband is killed during a strike and her son Pavel is imprisoned, Pelageya’s desperate efforts to save him lead her down a path of radicalization.
