Een komische western… Is dat een filmgenre waarop we zitten te wachten? Wel als Jane Fonda de outlaw uit de titel speelt en Lee Marvin zijn beste acteertalent bovenhaalt om een dubbele rol te spelen als de dronkaard Shelleen en de snoodaard Shaw. Volgens bekend filmcriticus Roger Ebert is CAT BALLOU dé komische western die alle andere in het genre achter zich laat. Het uitgangspunt van de film is eenvoudig: schooljuf Catherine verandert in de gevreesde outlaw en bendeleider Cat Ballou om de moord op haar vader te wreken.

De komische momenten worden begeleid door grappige muziek. Troubadours Nat King Cole (in zijn laatste project) en Stubby Kaye verwelkomen de kijker op hun banjo’s met The Ballad of Cat Ballou als een Grieks koor en na die eerste scène reizen we terug in de tijd naar het oorsprongsverhaal van Cat. Lee Marvin verschijnt op het toneel als dronkenman Kid Shelleen, de ingehuurde voormalige revolverheld die nogal letterlijk te diep in het glas kijkt. Marvin was voorheen vooral gekend voor zijn serieuze rollen (THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE), maar het publiek was zo verheugd om hem eindelijk in een komische rol te zien dat hij verbazend genoeg – maar verdiend – de Oscar voor Beste Acteur won voor CAT BALLOU. Jane Fonda had de moeilijke taak om het enige serieuze personage te spelen, naast een hoop losgeslagen mannen. Maar Fonda slaagt erin om de naïviteit van haar schooljuf te combineren met het indrukwekkende doorzettingsvermogen van haar outlaw.

A comical western… Is this a movie genre we’re waiting for? It is when Jane Fonda plays the outlaw from the title and Lee Marvin dusts off his acting chops to play a dual role as drunkard Shelleen and villain Shaw. According to renowned film critic Roger Ebert CAT BALLOU is the western comedy to surpass all others. The premise of the film is quite simple: school teacher Catherine turns into the fearless outlaw and gang leader Cat Ballou to avenge her father’s murder.

The comedy parts are accompanied by funny music. Minstrels Nat King Cole (in his last project) and Stubby Kaye welcome the audience with their banjos performing The Ballad of Cat Ballou as a Greek chorus. After that first scene, we travel back in time for the origin story of Cat. Lee Marvin appears on the screen as town-drunk Kid Shelleen, who quite literally falls off the wagon. Marvin was previously known for his serious roles (THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE), but the audience was so pleased to see him in a comedic role that he surprisingly – but rightly so – won the Academy Award for Best Actor for CAT BALLOU. Jane Fonda had the difficult task of playing the only serious character amongst a bunch of unhinged men. But Fonda manages to combine the naïveté of her school teacher with the impressive perseverance of the outlaw Cat.
