In Aranyer Din Ratri ARANYER DIN RATRI / DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST (1969) volgen we vier vrijgezellen uit Calcutta die zich terugtrekken in de bossen van Bihar. Hun vakantie, vol kleine ontmoetingen met de omgeving en bewoners, onthult langzaam hun onzekerheden en spanningen. Vooral hun interacties met twee vrouwen uit een nabijgelegen landhuis confronteren hen met hun aannames en mannelijke zelfbeeld.

Wat begint als een onschuldige ontsnapping wordt een spiegel voor zelfreflectie. In dromerig zwart-wit schetst Ray, met lichte satire, de innerlijke verandering van zijn personages. Zijn filmtaal, geworteld in het Indiase leven maar universeel invoelbaar, maakt dit werk tijdloos.

Met deze film verlegt Ray zijn focus van dorpsrealisme naar een fijnzinnige verkenning van psychologie en sociale spanning. Het is een keerpunt waarin karakter boven plot staat, en het alledaagse een bron van diepgang wordt—een bevestiging van Ray’s meesterschap.

Deze film vindt plaats in aanloop naar ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2025. Aan de hand van lezingen en filmvertoningen wordt er dit jaar gedoken in het oeuvre van Satyajit Ray. Geworteld in de culturele, historische en regionale realiteit van Bengalen, onthult zijn werk vele werelden — intiem, complex en universeel resonerend.

Deze vertoningen gebeuren in samenwerking met de master Filmstudies en Visuele Cultuur en Maarten Coëgnarts, assistent-professor in Film Studies aan de Universiteit van Antwerpen.

In ARANYER DIN RATRI / DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST (1969), four bachelors from Calcutta retreat to the forests of Bihar for a short holiday. As they settle into village life, small encounters with locals—and especially two women from a nearby estate—gradually expose their emotional insecurities and challenge their assumptions.

What begins as light escapism becomes a space for subtle self-reckoning. Filmed in radiant black and white, the film blends dreamlike calm with natural realism. Its layered tone—idyllic, mysterious, gently satirical—reveals Ray’s singular cinematic voice.

Here, Ray shifts from rural realism to a nuanced exploration of psychology and social tension. A pivotal work, where mood and character outweigh plot, and where the everyday holds quiet, lasting power—hallmarks of his enduring mastery.

This film takes place in anticipation to SUMMER FILM COLLEGE 2025. By the means of lectures and film screenings, this year we dive into the works of Satyajit Ray. Rooted in Bengal’s cultural, historical, and regional realities, his work reveals many worlds—intimate, complex, and universally resonant.

These screenings are a collaboration with the Master of Film Studies & Visual Culture and Maarten Coëgnarts, assistant professor in Film Studies at the University of Antwerp.
