Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) is een bekende en arrogante radioshow host die door een ondoordachte opmerking een massamoord uitlokt. Die ervaring doet hem in een neerwaartse spiraal belanden. Wanneer hij zijn dieptepunt bereikt, ontmoet hij een gekke dakloze man die zichzelf Parry (Robin Williams) noemt. Parry is na een zenuwinzinking geobsedeerd geraakt door het verhaal van de Fisher King, die door God uitgestuurd wordt om de Heilige Graal te zoeken. Parry ziet het nu als zijn taak om de Heilige Graal te vinden.

Wanneer Jack ontdekt dat hij onrechtstreeks de oorzaak is van Parry’s mentale problemen, beslist hij hem te helpen met zijn queeste. Met zijn vertolking van Parry voegt Robin Williams een komische noot toe aan een ondenkbaar trauma, wat perfect aansloot bij de visie van regisseur Terry Gilliam. Williams en Gilliam vonden elkaar in hun doel om humor toe te voegen aan de donkere kant van het leven. Mooi samengevat in Parry’s levensmotto: “There's three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer.”

Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) is a famous and arrogant radio show host who provokes a mass murder through a thoughtless remark. That experience makes him end up in a downward spiral. When he reaches rock bottom, he meets a crazy homeless man who goes by the name of Parry (Robin Williams). After a nervous breakdown, Parry got obsessed with the story of the Fisher King, sent by God to search for the Holy Grail. Parry now sees it as his job to find the Grail.

When Jack discovers he's indirectly responsible for Parry's mental problems, he decides to help him with his quest. With his performance as Parry, Robin Williams adds a comical side to an unthinkable trauma, perfectly matching director Terry Gilliam's vision. Williams and Gilliam found each other in their shared purpose to add humour to the dark side of life. Beautifully summarized in Parry's live motto: “There's three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer.”
