Hollywoodster Barbara Stanwyck vertolkt de rol van Drummond, de landeigenares die met ijzeren hand haar land, haar bende en de nabijgelegen stad Tombstone in het gareel houdt. Toen Stanwyck de rol op zich nam, twijfelde ze niet: haar stunts voor de film zou ze zelf doen, zelfs de scène waar ze achter een paard aan gesleept wordt. Die toewijding leverde haar het respect op van regisseur Samuel Fuller, die haar omschreef als “a helluva girl”. “It’s sad to say, but women do not have much importance in westerns,” liet bekend westernregisseur Anthony Mann noteren. Stanwyck rijdt ons in de beginscène van FORTY GUNS tegemoet om een ander verhaal te vertellen.

Marshall Griff Bonnell en zijn broers Chico en Wes komen aan in Tombstone met een aanhoudingsbevel voor één van Jessica Drummonds bendeleden. De gewezen revolverheld Griff en de zelfzekere Jessica voelen zich tot elkaar aangetrokken, maar hun tegenstrijdige loyaliteiten plaatsen hen lijnrecht tegenover elkaar. 

De plot van FORTY GUNS staat bol van de intrige en actie, corruptie, verraad en romantiek. Samuel Fuller stond bekend voor zijn karakterisering van sterke vrouwen. Zoals hij het zelf zei: “protagonists second to no man”. Vanaf de openingsscène in FORTY GUNS is er geen twijfel mogelijk: Jessica – belichaamd door de onverschrokken Stanwyck – is de baas. Stanwyck, die het paardrijden en haar stunts in de film zelf deed, mag dan ook niet ontbreken in onze (S)HEROES-focus.

“Notorious Jessica Drummond, leading her 40 thieves to hit the West like a Texas Tornado!” This is how FORTY GUNS is excitedly announced. Hollywood star Barbara Stanwyck plays the role of Drummond, the landowner who rules her land, her gang and the neighbouring town of Tombstone with an iron fist. When Stanwyck accepted the role, she didn’t hesitate: she would do all of the stunts in the movie herself, even the scene where she’s dragged behind a horse. This dedication earned her the respect of director Samuel Fuller, who described her as “a helluva girl”. “It’s sad to say, but women do not have much importance in westerns,” said known western director Anthony Mann. In the opening scene, Stanwyck tells us otherwise.

Marshall Griff Bonnell and his brothers Chico and Wes arrive in Tombstone with a warrant for one of Jessica Drummond’s gang members. The former gunslinger Griff and the self-assured Jessica are immediately attracted to one another, but their conflicting loyalties pit them against each other.  The plot of FORTY GUNS is packed with intrigue and action, corruption, betrayal and romance. Samuel Fuller was known for his portrayal of strong women. “Protagonists second to no man”, in his own words. From the opening scene of FORTY GUNS there’s no mistaking: Jessica -  embodied by the fearless Stanwyck – is the boss. Stanwyck, who performed all of her riding and stunts herself, cannot be missing from our (S)HEROES-programme.
