Ter ere van de zeventigste verjaardag van GODZILLA, het allerbeste filmmonster uit de geschiedenis (nee, King Kong komt niet eens in de buurt) brengt De Cinema op vraag van Fokke van der Meulen GOJIRA naar het grote scherm op 35mm! Na dit originele TOHO-meesterwerk uit 1954 kwamen er 32 sequels, 5 Hollywood-films en ontstond er een nieuw filmgenre. Is er een mooier plot dan grote monsters die steden (en bij voorkeur Tokyo) vertrappelen? Wij denken van niet! Dankzij schrijver en regisseur Ishirô Honda is de film dan ook veel meer dan enkel dat. GOJIRA heeft daadwerkelijk een maatschappelijke boodschap over de gevaren van atoomkracht en de gevolgen van kernwapens in zich. Maar het succes van deze film en de vele sequels is natuurlijk te danken aan Haruo Nakajima, de man die in het Godzilla-pak zat!

GODZILLA blijft filmmakers inspireren, zoals vorig jaar bleek met het moderne meesterwerk GODZILLA MINUS ONE. GOJIRA was de eerste film in een van de langst lopende franchises ter wereld, maar het originele dinosaurusachtige monster uit Honda’s pionierswerk blijft toch het meest iconisch.

De insteek van GOJIRA is a tale as old as time: de mens probeert moeder natuur te temmen en stoot daar op zijn tekortkomingen. Wat resulteert in de creatie van een destructief monster dat radioactieve stralen spuwt en alles en iedereen in zijn buurt verwoest. Godzilla is ontstaan door nucleaire wapentesten en wetenschappers en politici moeten samenwerken om het gigantische monster te bestrijden. Het verhaal van deze film werd getriggerd door de heersende angst voor een nucleaire holocaust, die leefde onder de inwoners van Japan tijdens de jaren '50, maar ook vandaag nog voelbaar is. De angst voor de Atomic Age blijft cinema inspireren.

In honor of the 70th anniversary of GODZILLA, the very best movie monster in history (no, King Kong doesn't even come close), De Cinema is bringing GOJIRA to the big screen on 35mm at the request of Fokke van der Meulen! After the original 1954 TOHO masterpiece came 32 sequels, 5 Hollywood films and a new film genre was born. Is there a more beautiful story than that of big monsters trampling cities (and preferably Tokyo)? We don't think so! Thanks to writer and director Ishirô Honda the film is much more than just that. GOJIRA actually carries a social message about the dangers of atomic power and the consequences of nuclear weapons. But of course, the success of this film and its many sequels is due to Haruo Nakajima, the man who was in the Godzilla suit!

The premise of GOJIRA is a tale as old as time: man tries to tame Mother Nature and encounters his shortcomings. What results is the creation of a destructive monster that spews radioactive rays and destroys everything and everyone around it. Godzilla is created by the tests of nuclear weapons, and scientists and politicians must work together to fight the giant monster. The story of this film was triggered by the prevailing fear of a nuclear holocaust, which was alive among the people of Japan during the 1950s, but is still felt today. The fear of the Atomic Age continues to inspire cinema.
