Er is een moment in India Donaldsons GOOD ONE dat de teleurstellingen tussen dochters en vaders (of kinderen en ouders) zo subtiel en ingrijpend weergeeft, dat het de adem beneemt. “Can’t we just have a nice day?”
De 17-jarige Sam gaat samen met haar vader Chris en een van haar vaders oudste vrienden, Matt, op driedaagse trektocht in de Catskills. De verrassend volwassen Sam moet schipperen tussen de ego’s van de twee mannen. Tijdens een gesprek bij het kampvuur wordt een grens overschreden. Donaldson laat het gezicht van haar actrice spreken in dat moment, schaars belicht door het kampvuur en met enkel natuurgeluiden op de achtergrond. Wanneer Sam haar vader in vertrouwen neemt, creëert zijn reactie een blijvende barst in hun band. Je kan je alleen maar voorstellen dat dit die ene teleurstelling te veel is.

Donaldson reflecteert met haar debuutfilm niet enkel op relatiedynamieken, maar ook op onbegrip tussen generaties. Donaldson vond de inspiratie voor het scenario van GOOD ONE tijdens de COVID-19 lockdowns, toen ze samenwoonde met haar vader, zijn derde vrouw en hun tieners én zelf voor het eerst ouder werd. Maar het zijn die ervaringen die van GOOD ONE een empathische parel maken. De vriendschap tussen Chris en Matt lijkt voornamelijk gebaseerd op hoe erg beide mannen de relaties in hun leven hebben verbrod. Met dat ene verschil dat Chris’ perikelen nog vrij positief zijn afgelopen, met een nieuw gezin, terwijl Matt in een echtscheiding verwikkeld zit en ook professioneel niet aan de bak komt. Maar in de piswedstrijd tussen de twee vijftigers houdt Donaldson haar lens op Sam gericht. Met haar eerste grote filmrol vat actrice Lily Collias de essentie van hoe het voelt om je plaats in de wereld – en het volwassendom – uit te zoeken, en te beseffen dat je ouders feilbaar zijn.  

De film doet denken aan de tweede langspeler van een andere onafhankelijke filmmaker met een uitgesproken, maar zachte stem en beeldtaal: Kelly Reichardts OLD JOY.

Voor ons was GOOD ONE dé ontdekking van de voorbije editie van Film Festival Gent, die maanden later nog nazindert. Je kan de film in avant-première bekijken tijdens onze SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS 2025.

There’s a moment in India Donaldson’s GOOD ONE that captures the disappointments between daughters and fathers (or children and parents) so subtly and profoundly that it takes your breath away. “Can’t we just have a nice day?” 
The 17-year-old Sam goes on a three-day hike in the Catskills with her father Chris and his old friend Matt. The surprisingly grown-up Sam has to manage the battling egos of the two men. During a conversation by the campfire a boundary is crossed. Donaldson lets her actress’ face speak in that moment, dimly lit by the campfire and with only nature sounds in the background. When Sam confides in her father, his reaction fractures their bond. You can only imagine she’s had to deal with one too many disappointments.

With her debut feature, Donaldson not only reflects on relationship dynamics, but on a lack of understanding between generations as well. Donaldson found the inspiration for the screenplay during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when she was living with her father, his third wife and their teenagers and when she was about to become a first-time parent herself. But those experiences have made GOOD ONE into an empathetic gem. The friendship between Chris and Matt seems to mostly be based on how much the men have screwed up their lives. With the one difference that Chris’ life has turned out pretty well, with a new family, while Matt is in the depths of a divorce and isn’t successful professionally either. But during the pissing contest between the fifty-somethings Donaldson keeps her lens closely focused on Sam. In her first starring role, actress Lily Collias captures the essence of how it feels to figure out your place in the adult world and to realise your parents are flawed.

The film echoes the second feature of another independent filmmaker with an outspoken, but soft voice and imagery: Kelly Reichardt’s OLD JOY.
