Gloria, a.k.a. the Bat Woman, is een rijke, lucha libre worstelaar die in haar vrije tijd misdaad bestrijdt. De politie roept haar hulp in om een reeks moorden te onderzoeken van worstelaars die dood teruggevonden worden aan de kust van Acapulco. De slachtoffers lijken verdronken te zijn, maar tijdens de lijkschouwing kloppen enkele dingen niet. FBI agent Mario Robles en Gloria komen op het spoor van de excentrieke neurochirurg Dr. Eric Williams. Aan boord van zijn zwevende laboratorium, de Reptilicus, werkt de man aan een nieuwe bovenmenselijke mutantensoort: een leger van Gill Men om voor hem de macht over de oceanen te veroveren. 

Regisseur Guillermo Del Toro beschrijft THE BAT WOMAN als een van zijn favoriete films en het uiterlijk van het monster uit de film was een inspiratiebron voor THE SHAPE OF WATER (2017). De heldin in THE BAT WOMAN is onbevreesd en een van de vele voorbeelden van vrouwelijke actiehelden in Mexicaanse cinema uit de jaren 60. De film zelf ontleent van het exploitation genre en valt in moderne termen binnen het genre van de B-film. Tegelijkertijd was hij cruciaal om de luchadoras – vrouwelijke worstelaars die ten tijde van de film niet mochten deelnemen aan wedstrijden in de ring – op het scherm en in de spotlight te brengen. Wij geven hen graag hun verdiende plaats terug in het pulp cult canon.

Gloria, a.k.a. the Bat Woman, is a rich, lucha libre wrestler who fights crime in her spare time. The police have requested her help to investigate a series of murders of wrestlers who have been found dead at the coast of Acapulco. The victims seem to have drowned, but during the autopsies some things don’t add up. FBI agent Mario Rubles and Gloria track down the eccentric neurosurgeon Dr. Eric Williams. On board of his floating laboratory, the Reptilicus, the mad scientist is working on a new superhuman mutant species: an army of Gill Men to aid him in ruling the oceans.

Director Guillermo Del Toro describes THE BAT WOMAN as one of his favourite films and the image of the monster in the movie became an inspiration for THE SHAPE OF WATER (2017). The heroine in THE BAT WOMAN has no fear and is one of the many examples of female action heroes in Mexican cinema of the 60s. the film itself takes a page out of the book of the exploitation genre and is, in modern terms, part of the B-movie genre. But at the same time it was crucial as well to bring the luchadoras – female wrestlers who weren’t allowed to compete in the ring at the time of the film – to the screen and into the spotlight. We love to give them back their rightful spot in the pulp cult canon.
