Pionier van de New German Cinema Wim Wenders (DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN) bracht zijn scherpe oog voor het landschap naar het Amerikaanse zuidwesten met PARIS, TEXAS, een diep ontroerende karakterstudie, bijgestaan door een inmiddels iconische score van Ry Cooder. PARIS, TEXAS volgt de mysterieuze, zwijgzame vagebond Travis (een indringende rol van Harry Dean Stanton, wiens gezicht een landschap op zich vormt) terwijl hij weer contact probeert te leggen met zijn jonge zoon, die bij zijn broer (Dean Stockwell) in Los Angeles woont, en zijn vermiste vrouw (Nastassja Kinski). Vanuit deze eenvoudige opzet schept Wenders samen met scenarist (en acteur) Sam Shepard (ZABRISKIE POINT, FOOL FOR LOVE) een aangrijpende kijk op codes van mannelijkheid en de mythe van de Amerikaanse familie, evenals een voortreffelijke visuele verkenning van een uitgestrekte, afbrokkelende wereld van ravijnen en neon (geschoten door de eigenzinnige lens van de Nederlandse meestercinematograaf Robby Müller).

Deze splinternieuwe 4K-restauratie, gemaakt ter ere van de 40e verjaardag van de film, door de Wim Wenders Stiftung en in samenwerking met Argos Films, ging in première tijdens het afgelopen Filmfestival van Cannes.

Pioneer of the New German Cinema, Wim Wenders (DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN), brought his sharp eye for landscapes to the American Southwest with PARIS, TEXAS, a deeply moving character study, accompanied by an iconic score by Ry Cooder. PARIS, TEXAS follows the mysterious, silent drifter Travis (a compelling performance by Harry Dean Stanton, whose face is a landscape in itself) as he tries to reconnect with his young son, who lives with his brother (Dean Stockwell) in Los Angeles, and his disappeared wife (Nastassja Kinski). From this simple premise, Wenders crafts together with writer (and actor) Sam Shepard (ZABRISKIE POINT, FOOL FOR LOVE) a poignant exploration of masculinity and the myth of the American family, as well as a superb visual exploration of a vast, crumbling world of canyons and neon (captured through the idiosyncratic lens of Dutch master cinematographer Robby Müller).

This brand-new 4K restoration, created in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary by the Wim Wenders Foundation in collaboration with Argos Films, premiered at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
