Voor de zesde editie van STUDIODROME nemen curatoren Jonas Govaerts en Kwinten Scheepers u mee naar het far out filmjaar van ’98, toen bowlingbanen plots drukker bezocht werden dan discotheken, en barmannen aller landen de vraag naar White Russians niet meer konden bijhouden. Na de screening kan u in de foyer terecht voor een nihilistisch mini-concert van Sjoerd Bruil, die nu al laat weten dat hij niét ‘Peaceful Easy Feeling’ gaat coveren: “I hate the fucking Eagles, man!”

Een kwarteeuw na zijn release, blijft THE BIG LEBOWSKI één van de meest citeerbare films aller tijden: maak u alvast klaar om tijdens ons drankspel luidkeels “Careful man, there’s a beverage here!” richting scherm te schreeuwen. Met White Russian bar voor en na de film! Je zou het bijna niet geloven, maar toen THE BIG LEBOWKSI voor het eerst op een publiek werd losgelaten, waren de reacties maar matig positief. Ondertussen is de film, met zijn excentrieke personages, absurde wendingen, en eclectische soundtrack, uitgegroeid tot een ware cultfavoriet. Jeff Bridges speelt het titelpersonage Lebowski, ofwel “The Dude”: een fervent bowler uit Los Angeles die niets liever doet dan White Russians drinken. Hij wordt verward met een miljonair met dezelfde naam en komt daardoor in een mallemolen van vreemde gebeurtenissen terecht, waarbij onder meer pornofilmproducenten, fretten en grote sommen geld betrokken zijn.

De film is losjes gebasseerd op het werk van de Amerikaans-Britse romanschijver Raymond Chandler. “We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that's ultimately unimportant,” aldus regisseur Coen. Een plot waar noch kop noch staart aan vast te knopen is dus, maar ondertussen passeren wel een resem straffe Hollywoodacteurs de revue — met onder meer Sam Elliott, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore en David Thewlis op de credits.

A quarter of a century after its release, THE BIG LEBOWSKI remains one of the most quotable films of all time: get ready to loudly scream “Careful man, there’s a beverage here!” at the screen during our drinking game. With a White Russian bar before and after the screening!

You almost wouldn’t believe it, but when THE BIG LEBOWSKI was released to the public for the first time in ’98 the audience response was only moderately positive. Meanwhile, the film, with its eccentric characters, absurd plot twists and eclectic soundtrack, has grown into a true cult favorite. Jeff Bridges plays the title character Lebowski, or ‘The Dude’: an avid bowler from Los Angeles who loves nothing more than to drink White Russians. He is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name and ends up in a whirlwind of strange situations, in which porn producers, ferrets and large sums of money are involved.
