In de film speelt Mosquito een verstokte stand-upcomedian met een cynisch gevoel voor humor. In de setting van een typisch Vlaams café rakelt hij absurde anekdotes op. Zijn verhalen zijn verwarrend, de humor is zo plat dat het verleidelijk is. WHEN CHANGING YOUR MIND GETS YOU KILLED reflecteert op de negatieve manier waarop we veranderende meningen in de huidige maatschappij beschouwen, en op ons vermogen om excuses aan te bieden en te accepteren.

De film wordt ingeleid door Nav Haq (geassocieerd directeur van het M HKA). Na de filmvertoning wordt er een lezing gegeven door kunstenares Gabi Ngcobo met ruimte voor een Q&A. 

De vertoning vormt het vertrekpunt voor Gabi Ngcobo, die als curator een belangrijke gesprekspartner was voor Mosquito in de beginjaren van zijn praktijk. In haar lezing zal ze reflecteren op Mosquito's carrière en oeuvre. Gabi Ngcobo werkt reeds meer dan twee decennia als curator, auteur en kunstenaar. Aanvang 2024 werd ze directeur van het Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam (voormalig Witte de With Centrum voor Hedendaagse Kunst). Voordat ze bij Melly kwam, was ze Curatorial Director van het Javett Art Centre aan de Universiteit van Pretoria (Javett-UP) in Zuid-Afrika. In 2018 cureerde ze de tiende editie van de Berlijnse Biënnale getiteld We Don't Need Another Hero, en in 2016 was ze een van de co-curatoren van de 32e Biënnale van São Paulo.

Portraying a seemingly downtrodden stand-up comedian with a cynical sense of humour, Mosquito’s persona attempts to tell absurd comedic anecdotes in the setting of a typical Flemish cafe. The stories are confounding, the humour falls so flat its beguiling. But more broadly, WHEN CHANGING YOUR MIND GETS YOU KILLED can be seen as a meditation on the negative ways in which we perceive the altering of opinions in society today, and our capacity to offer and accept apologies.

The film will be introduced by Nav Haq (Associate Director of M HKA). After the screening, artist Gabi Ngcobo will give a lecture with room for a Q&A.

The screening will offer the departure-point for Gabi Ngcobo, who, as a curator, was a key interlocutor for Mosquito in the formative years of his practice. In her talk, she will offer her own reflections on Mosquito’s career and practice. With a career spanning more than two decades, Gabi became the new director of the Kunstinstituut Melly (formerly Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art), Rotterdam, at the beginning of 2024. Before joining Melly, she was Curatorial Director of the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) in South Africa. In 2018, she curated the tenth edition of the Berlin Biennale titled We Don’t Need Another Hero, and in 2016, she was one of the co-curators of the 32nd São Paulo Biennial.
