ARCHITECTURE ON FILM

Vanaf 2025 slaan De Cinema en het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi) de handen in elkaar voor een unieke reeks van maandelijkse filmavonden onder de titel “Architecture on Film”. Elke eerste dinsdag van de maand word je tijdens een film met inleiding meegetrokken in de wereld van architectuur en film, waar gebouwen personages worden, steden de achtergrond vormen, en ontwerp de verhalen mee vormgeeft. De films worden steeds vertoond in de originele taalversie met Engelse ondertitels, de inleidingen zijn in het Engels gesproken. Voor wie een herkansing wil: de derde dinsdag van de maand is er nog een vertoning, maar dan zonder inleiding.
De reeks opende rond het thema Living Together, dat draait om samenleven en sociale architectuur. Op het programma stonden de Oostenrijkse documentaire 27 STOREYS, die een inkijk biedt in het iconische woonpark Alterlaa in Wenen, waar 10.000 mensen samenleven op 27 verdiepingen. Alsook de Vlaamse kortfilm IEMAND THUIS en CINEMA GRATTACIELO, een Italiaanse documentaire over de Rimini Skyscraper, een omstreden 100 meter hoog gebouw dat ooit symbool stond voor moderniteit, maar nu een verticaal dorp is met bewoners uit 20 verschillende landen. In maart verschuift de aandacht naar vrouwelijke perspectieven en diversiteit binnen architectuur, beginnend met de gloednieuwe Zwitserse docu-fictiefilm E.1027 – EILEEN GRAY AND THE HOUSE BY THE SEA, die de vaak onderbelichte rol van Eileen Gray in de geschiedenis van de architectuur in de schijnwerpers zet.

From 2025, De Cinema and the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) are joining forces for a unique series of monthly film evenings under the title ‘Architecture on Film’. Every first Tuesday of the month, a film with introduction will draw you into the world of architecture and film, where buildings become characters, cities form the background, and design helps shape the stories. The films are always shown in the original language version with English subtitles, the introductions are in English. For those who want a second chance: there is another screening on the third Tuesday of the month, but without introductions.
The series opened with the theme Living Together, which revolves around living together and social architecture. The programme included the Austrian documentary 27 STOREYS, which offers an insight into Vienna's iconic Alterlaa residential park, where 10,000 people live together on 27 floors. As well as the Flemish short film IEMAND THUIS and CINEMA GRATTACIELO, an Italian documentary about the Rimini Skyscraper, a controversial 100-metre-high building that once symbolised modernity but is now a vertical village with residents from 20 different countries. In March, the focus shifts to female perspectives and diversity within architecture, starting with the brand-new Swiss docu-fiction film E.1027 - EILEEN GRAY AND THE HOUSE BY THE SEA, which explores Eileen Gray's often underexposed role in the history of architecture.
