Die vraag zet meteen de toon van regisseur Richard Linklaters heerlijke stream of consciousness ode aan de jeugd, spontaniteit en de liefde voor het leven, BEFORE SUNRISE.

Een jonge man en vrouw ontmoeten elkaar toevallig op de Eurail-trein van Budapest naar Wenen. Jesse (Ethan Hawke) is een Amerikaanse toerist, die in Wenen een vlucht terug naar de VS zal nemen. Céline (Julie Delpy) is een Franse studente, die op weg is naar Parijs. Ze raken aan de praat en voelen een connectie met elkaar. Wanneer Jesse haar vraagt om van de trein te stappen en de dag samen te spenderen in Wenen, stemt Céline in. Ze doden samen de tijd met praten, wandelen, eten en drinken. Tijdens hun tijd samen kunnen Céline en Jesse zich losmaken van de wereld rondom hen. Gesprekken over liefde, het leven, religie en kleine observaties leiden tot de grote vraag: zullen ze elkaar terugzien of blijft het bij één wondere dag?

Gelukkig moeten we niet al te lang wachten op een antwoord op dit what if?-scenario. Deze zomer vertonen we de volledige BEFORE-trilogie (BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET en BEFORE MIDNIGHT, apart maar op zondag 7 september ook na elkaar). BEFORE SUNRISE maakt ook deel uit van onze ENDLESS NIGHTS/ETERNAL SUMMER-focus.

This question immediately sets the scene for director Richard Linklater’s wonderful stream of consciousness homage to youth, spontaneity and love for life, BEFORE SUNRISE.

A young man and woman meet each other by chance on the Eurail train from Budapest to Vienna. Jesse is an American tourist who will take a flight back to the US from Vienna. Céline (Julie Delpy) is a French student who is on her way back to Paris. They start talking and feel a connection. When Jesse asks her to get off the train and spend the day together in Vienna, Céline agrees. They pass the time together talking, walking, eating and drinking. During this time, Céline and Jesse are able to detach themselves from the world around them. Conversations about love, life, religion and passing observations lead to the big question: will they meet again after this fateful day?

Luckily for us, we won’t have to wait long to find out the answer to this what if?-scenario. This summer, we will screen the entire BEFORE-trilogy (BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET and BEFORE MIDNIGHT, separately but also in a marathon screening on Sunday 7 September). BEFORE SUNRISE is also part of our ENDLESS NIGHTS/ETERNAL SUMMER focus.
