ARCHITECTURE ON FILM

Vanaf 2025 slaan De Cinema en het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi) de handen in elkaar voor een unieke reeks van maandelijkse filmavonden onder de titel “Architecture on Film”. Elke eerste dinsdag van de maand word je tijdens een film met inleiding meegetrokken in de wereld van architectuur en film, waar gebouwen personages worden, steden de achtergrond vormen, en ontwerp de verhalen mee vormgeeft. De films worden steeds vertoond in de originele taalversie met Engelse ondertitels, de inleidingen zijn in het Engels gesproken. Voor wie een herkansing wil: de derde dinsdag van de maand is er nog een vertoning, maar dan zonder inleiding.
In april presenteren we een double-bill met films uit twee buurlanden: Nederland en België. Centraal staan Margaret Staal-Kropholler en Simone Guillissen-Hoa, inspirerende architecten die geschiedenis schreven als de eerste vrouwen in hun respectieve landen met een zelfstandige praktijk. De vertoning van VANUIT DEN GEZICHTSHOEK DER BRUIKBAARHEID + SIMONE op 1 april wordt ingeleid door architecte Apolline Vranken die het platform L'architecture qui dégenre oprichtte om de dominante orde in vraag te stellen, gelijkheid tot stand te brengen en optimisme te bevorderen.
In mei onderzoeken we de wisselwerking tussen stad, geestelijke gezondheid en zorgvoorzieningen met 2023 Gouden Beer winnaar SUR L'ADAMANT van Nicholas Philibert.

From 2025, De Cinema and the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) are joining forces for a unique series of monthly film evenings under the title ‘Architecture on Film’. Every first Tuesday of the month, a film with introduction will draw you into the world of architecture and film, where buildings become characters, cities form the background, and design helps shape the stories. The films are always shown in the original language version with English subtitles, the introductions are in English. For those who want a second chance: there is another screening on the third Tuesday of the month, but without introductions.
In April we present a double-bill showcasing two films from neighboring countries, the Netherlands and Belgium. The spotlight will be on Margaret Staal-Kropholler and Simone Guillissen-Hoa, inspiring architects who made history as the first women in their respective nations to establish independent practices. The screening of VANUIT DEN GEZICHTSHOEK DER BRUIKBAARHEID + SIMONE on April 1 will be introduced by architect Apolline Vranken, who founded the platform L'architecture qui dégenre to challenge the dominant order, establish equality, and promote optimism.
In May we explore the spatial relations between the city, mental health and care facilities with 2023 Golden Bear Winner SUR L'ADAMANT by Nicholas Philibert.
