De 20-jarige Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is een autodidact en wiskundegenie. Na een gevangenisstraf gaat hij aan de slag als conciërge aan de universiteit van MIT. Wanneer een professor een moeilijk wiskundevraagstuk achterlaat als proef voor zijn studenten, lost Will het probleem anoniem op. Na een aanvaring met de politie krijgt Will een keuze: wiskunde studeren aan MIT, mits zijn participatie aan psychotherapie bij Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), of terug naar de gevangenis.

Het scenario van GOOD WILL HUNTING werd geschreven door Matt Damon en Ben Affleck die meteen een Oscar wonnen voor hun werk en een bloeiende carrière tegemoet gingen. Robin Williams zou ook zijn eerste en enige Oscar winnen voor Beste Bijrol als de psychotherapeut die probeert te doorgronden waar de pijn en woede van zijn cliënt vandaan komen. De rol is atypisch voor Williams. Een personage dat niet in het middelpunt van de aandacht staat en vooral reageert op anderen. Maar ook een personage dat een van de meer ontroerende filmische monologen over liefde deelt.

The 20-year-old Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is an autodidact and math genius. After a prison sentence, he starts working as a janitor at the University of MIT. When a professor leaves behind a tough math problem as a test for his student, Will anonymously solves it. After an encounter with the police, Will gets a choice: study math at MIT, provided he participates in psychotherapy with Dr Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), or return to prison.

The screenplay of GOOD WILL HUNTING was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who won an Oscar for their work and were heading a thriving career. Robin Williams also won his first and only Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as the psychotherapist who tries to fathom where his client's pain and anger are coming from. The role is atypical for Williams; a character that's not at the centre of attention and mostly reacts to others. But also a character that shares one of the more touching cinematic monologues about love.
