Onze derde samenwerking met de geëngageerde filmclub Movie Matters, waarbij maatschappelijk relevante thema's worden aangekaart en besproken met een gastspreker en het publiek. Deze keer tonen ze MARY AND MAX. Deze indringende klei-animatiefilm uit 2009 van Adam Elliot volgt de bijzondere vriendschap tussen de jonge Mary (ingesproken door Toni Collette) en de middelbare Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman), die het syndroom van Asperger heeft. Hun correspondentie brengt aangrijpend in beeld hoe eenzaamheid, communicatie en relaties ons zowel kunnen verrijken als compliceren.

Volgens criticus Mark Fisher doet de somber gekleurde claymation film denken aan het werk van Todd Solondz – en niet enkel omdat in diens donkere satire HAPPINESS (1998) Philip Seymour Hoffman ook een eenzame man speelt. ‘Elliot haalt op dezelfde manier humor uit grimmigheid’, schreef de Britse cultuurcriticus in Sight & Sound. ‘Hij creëert een wereld van disfunctie, wanorde en wreedheid. Toch zijn de donkerste momenten in zijn film doordrenkt met een bijtende komedie.’

Our third collaboration with the socially conscious film club Movie Matters, which addresses and discusses socially relevant topics with a guest speaker and the audience. This time, they are presenting MARY AND MAX. This poignant clay-animated film from 2009 by Adam Elliot follows the unique friendship between young Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) and middle-aged Max (voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman), who has Asperger's syndrome. Their correspondence poignantly illustrates how loneliness, communication, and relationships can both enrich and complicate our lives.

According to critic Mark Fisher, the somber-colored claymation film is reminiscent of the work of Todd Solondz – not only because Solondz's dark satire HAPPINESS (1998) also features Philip Seymour Hoffman as a lonely man. ‘Elliot draws comedy from grimness in the same way’, wrote the British culture critic in Sight & Sound. ‘He creates a world of dysfunction, disorder and brutality, but even at its darkest moments his film is suffused with a mordant comedy.’
