SUMMER OF SOUL (...OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED)

In zijn veelgeprezen debuut als filmmaker presenteert Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson een krachtige en meeslepende documentaire - deels muziekfilm, deels historisch verslag van een episch evenement dat de zwarte geschiedenis, cultuur en mode vierde. Gedurende zes weken in de zomer van 1969, slechts 160 kilometer ten zuiden van Woodstock, werd The Harlem Cultural Festival gefilmd in Mount Morris Park (nu Marcus Garvey Park). De beelden waren grotendeels vergeten - tot nu toe. SUMMER OF SOUL werpt een licht op het belang van geschiedenis en de helende kracht van muziek in tijden van onrust, zowel in het verleden als in het heden. De film bevat concerten van Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension en meer.
