Deze Oekraïense versie van Romeo en Julia betekende de terugkeer van de gesofisticeerde volkspoëzie in de Sovjetfilm. Het was voor dit soort vlammende provocatie dat Parajanov zou vervolgd worden. This Ukrainian version of Romeo and Juliet marked the return of sophisticated folk poetry to Soviet cinema. It was for this kind of flaming provocation that Parajanov would be persecuted. Sublime baroque folk tale set in the Carpathians, based on the poetic novella by Ukrainian writer Kotsiubinsky, with which Parajanov finally broke through in the West.
