TWELVE ANGRY MEN

Krachtig langspeeldebuut van regisseur Lumet. Een tiener wordt beschuldigd van de moord op zijn vader. Tijdens het proces moeten twaalf juryleden zich uitspreken over de vraag of de jongen schuldig is of niet. Tijdens de beraadslaging tussen de jury wordt duidelijk dat elke man zijn eigen (voor)oordelen heeft. Lumet zet in 12 ANGRY MEN de vraag over schuld, onschuld en bewijs centraal. De film speelt zich bijna volledig af in één kamertje.

Lumet nam de film op in een periode van 21 dagen en liet zijn 12 acteurs soms urenlang samen in een kamer zitten zonder opnames te maken om echte juryberaadslagingen te simuleren.

Few filmmakers have been so consistently respectful of the audience's intelligence”, noteert Amerikaans criticus Roger Ebert in zijn lovende bespreking van de film. En door dat respect voor de intelligentie van hun publiek, creëerden Lumet en Fonda een rechtbankdrama dat iconisch zou worden voor het genre.
