Weten wie je ouders zijn en waar je vandaan komt: een basisrecht, maar voor veel geadopteerden is dat géén vanzelfsprekendheid. In de documentaire UNE HISTOIRE A SOI laat regisseur Amandine Gay verschillende geadopteerden aan het woord over hun zoektocht naar identiteit, afstamming, en wat het betekent om ergens 'thuis' te horen. Tegelijkertijd verweven de vertellers hun persoonlijke verhaal met de politieke geschiedenis van adoptie en kijken ze kritisch naar de 'goede bedoelingen' die hun adoptie vormgaven.

Na OUVRIR LA VOIX – haar eerste film waarin vierentwintig Franstalige vrouwen van Afrikaanse afkomst aan het woord komen – die in 2017 in de Franse, Belgische en Zwitserse bioscopen werd uitgebracht komt haar tweede film, UNE HISTOIRE À SOI, in 2021 in de zalen. Als regisseur, academica en activiste omschrijft Amandine Gay zichzelf als een politieke auteur, omdat schrijven zowel filmisch, journalistiek als choreografisch kan zijn. Voor haar is het heroveren van het eigen narratief een daad van emancipatie.

Girls on Film organiseert deze vertoning in samenwerking met het Afstammingscentrum en Steunpunt Adoptie. De film wordt ingeleid en aansluitend op de vertoning volgt een panelgesprek met ervaringsdeskundigen (Shashitu Rahima Tarirga, San-Ho Correwyn, Patsy Van Den Bogaert).

Knowing who your parents are and where you come from: a basic human right, but for many adoptees, it’s far from a given. In the documentary UNE HISTOIRE A SOI, director Amandine Gay gives a voice to various adoptees as they share their journeys in search of identity, roots, and what it means to 'belong' somewhere. The narrators intertwine their personal stories with the political history of adoption, critically examining the ‘good intentions’ that shaped their adoptions.

After Ouvrir La Voix – her first film, in which twenty-four French-speaking women of African descent share their stories – her second film Une Histoire à Soi hit the screens in 2021. As a director, academic, and activist, Amandine Gay describes herself as a political author, because writing can be cinematic, journalistic, and choreographic. For her, reclaiming one's own narrative is an act of emancipation.

Girls on Film is organizing this screening in collaboration with the Afstammingscentrum and Steunpunt Adoptie. The film will be introduced and following the screening, there will be a (Dutch) panel discussion with various experts (Shashitu Rahima Tarirga, San-Ho Correwyn, Patsy Van Den Bogaert).
