CIVIL WAR, de indrukwekkende nieuwste film van Alex Garland (EX MACHINA), toont een dystopische, niet zo verre toekomst waar de Verenigde Staten uit elkaar vallen. Het verhaal volgt een team van journalisten, onder leiding van de legendarische fotografe Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), die vastbesloten zijn de gruwelijke realiteit te documenteren terwijl hun land kreunt onder een bloederige burgerloorlog. Hun reis leidt hen naar Washington, D.C., waar de strijd tussen de verzetsstrijders Westelijke Krachten en de federale regering escaleert.

CIVIL WAR, the impressive newest film by Alex Garland (EX MACHINA), presents a dystopian world in a not-so-far future, where the United States is falling apart. The story follows a team of journalists, led by legendary photographer Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), who is determined to document the terrible reality while their country suffers from a bloody civil war. Their journey leads them to Washington D.C., where the battle between the resistance fighters Western Forcers and the federal government escalates.

Garland creates an intense, visually stunning experience that shockingly shows the ethical dilemmas and personal sacrifices of war journalists. This way, the thriller offers a provoking commentary on the (sometimes polarising) role of the media in times of crisis as well as on the toxic war rhetoric that can be heard more frequently in the political arena. This makes CIVIL WAR a powerful wakeup call, as well as a challenge for the viewer to think about the future we want: one that goes forwards, or backwards.
