In zijn prachtige zwart-witdocumentaire zoomt filmmaker Sam Jones geduldig in op die twee tegenstrijdige krachten om een bijzonder portret te schetsen van het make or break-moment van Wilco, de Amerikaanse indieband van Jeff Tweedy die in 2002 voor zijn grote doorbraak stond. Na gesmaakte albums als A.M (1995) en Summerteeth (1999) kreeg Jones de kans om de opnames van Yankee Hotel Foxtrot te capteren – en al de persoonlijke, artistieke en financiële spanningen die daarbij kwamen kijken. Van een label dat de eigenzinnige folkrockers de laan uit stuurt, tot hun eigenzinnige zoektocht om hun diepsnijdende nummers toch tot bij hun publiek te krijgen.

Vandaag is Wilco, mede dankzij zijn eigenzinnige meesterwerk Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, een van de belangrijkste alternatieve rockbands ter wereld die steevast shows uitverkoopt – zoals de twee concerten op 16 en 17 juni 2025 in OLT Rivierenhof. En I am trying to break your heart? Met zijn beeld van een band die constant zijn eigen ding doet (en zo zijn artistiek én commercieel potentieel benut) inspireerde deze nieuwe generaties. Toen Adam Granduciel van The War on Drugs Jones’ docu voor de eerste keer zag, wist de zanger-gitarist het: ‘Dat is wat ik wil doen. Ik wil in een of ander vervallen magazijn zitten met vrienden, ideeën uitwisselen en muziek maken, snap je? Het voelde gewoon zo logisch.’

In his stunning black-and-white documentary, filmmaker Sam Jones patiently zooms in on these two opposing forces to paint a striking portrait of Wilco’s make-or-break moment. The American indie band, led by Jeff Tweedy, was on the verge of a major breakthrough in 2002. After well-received albums like A.M. (1995) and Summerteeth (1999), Jones was given the opportunity to capture the recording sessions of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot—along with all the personal, artistic, and financial tensions that came with them. From a record label dropping the idiosyncratic folk rockers to their relentless search for a way to bring their deeply affecting songs to their audience.

Today, thanks in part to the singular masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco has become one of the most important alternative rock bands in the world, consistently selling out shows—including two concerts at OLT Rivierenhof. And I Am Trying to Break Your Heart? With its portrayal of a band steadfastly following its own path (and, in doing so, realizing both its artistic and commercial potential), the film has inspired new generations. When Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs first saw Jones’ documentary, the singer-guitarist knew: "That’s what I want to do. I want to be in some fucked-up warehouse with some friends, batting ideas around and making music, you know? It just made so much sense."
