De dromerige Gelsomina wordt door haar moeder verkocht aan de rondreizende krachtpatser Zampanó, die haar als een bruut behandelt. Hij treedt op in dorpspleinen en laat een hoed rondgaan voor fooien. Gelsomina is zijn assistente en wordt als clown een bedreven straatperformer. Ze sluiten aan bij een circus en reizen samen door het Italiaanse platteland, een pad bezaaid met hartzeer. Fellini’s ode aan het surrealistische circusbestaan.
