SCARFACE

Tony Camonte (een nauwelijks verholen portret van Al Capone) roeit rivaliserende bendes uit, verslaat zijn eigen baas, wordt almachtig en controleert zowel de dranksmokkel als de politiek in Chicago. SCARFACE vormt samen met LITTLE CEASAR en PUBLIC ENEMY het grote triptiek van de klassieke pre-code gangsterfilm. Zij stonden en staan model voor alle latere films in het genre. Maar waar de twee vroegere films in wezen realistisch waren, is de film van Howard Hawks en Ben Hecht donker, expressionistisch, cynisch en gewelddadig (28 moorden in 90 minuten).

Geschokt eisten de Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America aanpassingen én de toevoeging van de ondertitel ‘The Shame of a Nation’.
