Armand Goldman is de eigenaar van een populaire drag nachtclub in Miami Beach. De ster van de club is Starina, het drag persona van Albert, de flamboyante levenspartner van Armand. Elaine May baseerde haar scenario op de Franse film LA CAGE AUX FOLLES uit 1978. May voegde de plotlijn over de conservatieve Senator en zijn rechtse moraliteitspolitiek toe om de heersende anti-LGBTQ retoriek van die tijd aan de kaak te stellen. De korte inhoud van de film kan op het eerste gezicht misschien aanstootgevend lezen, maar de performances van Robin Williams en de rest van de sterrencast (Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, …) zijn overtuigend.

De film gaat over het feit dat het concept van een “echte man” zijn net zo goed een performance is als iets anders. Zowel homofobie als toxische mannelijkheid worden in de film te kijk gezet. THE BIRDCAGE zorgde voor een belangrijk keerpunt van LGBTQ-representatie in de media door zijn box-office succes. Hoewel de flamboyante weergave van bepaalde personages ook tegenkanting veroorzaakte als verderzetten van stereotiepen, reageerde regisseur Mike Nichols dat zijn film over een specifieke community gaat: "Our jokes were about divas, about the theater, and about the stars.”

Armand Goldman is the owner of a popular drag nightclub in Miami Beach. The star of the club is Starina, the drag persona of Albert and flamboyant life partner of Armand. Armand's one-night stand of twenty years ago resulted in a son, Val, who Armand and Albert raised together. When Val announces he's engaged to Barbara Keeley, the daughter of conservative Senator Kevin Keeley, Armand and Albert decide to pretend they're different than they are...

Elaine May based her screenplay on the French film LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (1978). May added the subplot about the conservative Senator and his right-wing morality politics to denounce the then-ruling anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. The short substance of the film may seem offensive at first sight, but the performances of Robin Williams and the rest of the cast (Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, …) are very convincing.

The film is about the fact that the concept of a "real man" is just as much a performance as everything else. The film shines a light on homophobia as well as toxic masculinity. THE BIRDCAGE caused an important turning point of LGBTQ representation in the media through its box office success. Despite also causing opposition for continuing stereotypes through the flamboyant depiction of certain characters, director Mike Nichols responded that his film is about a specific community: "Our jokes were about divas, about the theater, and about the stars.”
