In HUMAN FLOW reist kunstenaar en activist Ai Weiwei door meer dan twintig landen om de wereldwijde vluchtelingencrisis in beeld te brengen. Van de stranden van Lesbos tot de woestijnen van Irak en de kampen in Kenia: overal zoekt hij mensen op die hun thuis moesten verlaten door oorlog, klimaatverandering of onderdrukking.

Met onvergetelijke beelden – van een eindeloze zee van achtergelaten reddingsvesten tot brandende olievlaktes – toont Ai hoe massamigratie vaak wordt gereduceerd tot statistiek. Maar HUMAN FLOW weigert die ontmenselijking. De film laat vooral mensen zien: gezinnen, kinderen, overlevers, zoekers. En Ai zelf, als betrokken getuige, in het hart van de crisis. HUMAN FLOW is geen pamflet, maar een visueel krachtige oproep tot empathie. Een film die niet alleen de schaal van het probleem toont, maar ook de noodzaak om te kijken, te luisteren en niet weg te kijken.

De voorstelling van zaterdag 21 juni wordt voorafgegaan door een inleiding van Gideon Hakker (MAS).

Wij vertonen deze film in onze samenwerking MAS x De Cinema 2025, naar aanleiding van de MAS COMPASSION-expo (van 31 januari 2025 tot 31 augustus 2025).

Bezoekers die een ticket van De Cinema kunnen tonen van een vertoning binnen het MAS x De Cinema 2025-programma, krijgen korting op een ticket voor de MAS COMPASSION-expo. Omgekeerd geeft een ticket van de MAS COMPASSION-expo (vanaf 31 januari 2025 tot de vertoningsdag van de betreffende film) recht op een verlaagd tarief (€6,50 i.p.v. €9) bij aankoop van een filmticket voor het MAS x De Cinema 2025-programma.

In HUMAN FLOW, artist and activist Ai Weiwei travels through more than twenty countries to document the global refugee crisis. From the beaches of Lesbos to the deserts of Iraq and the camps in Kenya, he meets people who have been forced to leave their homes due to war, climate change, or oppression.

With unforgettable imagery – from an endless sea of abandoned life jackets to burning oil fields – Ai shows how mass migration is often reduced to statistics. But HUMAN FLOW resists that dehumanisation. The film focuses on people: families, children, survivors, and seekers—and Ai himself, present and engaged at the heart of the crisis. HUMAN FLOW is not a manifesto, but a visually powerful call for empathy. A film that not only reveals the scale of the problem but also the urgent need to look, to listen, and not to turn away.

The screening on Saturday 21 June will be preceded by an introduction by Gideon Hakker (MAS).

We screen this film in collaboration with MAS, in connection with their COMPASSION expo (from the 31st of January until the 31st of August 2025).

Visitors with a ticket from a screening from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme will receive a reduction on a ticket for the MAS COMPASSION expo. Vice versa, a ticket of the MAS COMPASSION-expo (from the 31st of January until the screening day of the film in question) will entitle the visitor to a reduction ticket (€6,50 instead of €9) for a film from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme.
