Duits pionier Lotte Reiniger is onlosmakelijk verbonden met haar innovatieve silhouettenfilms, waarin papieren en kartonnen uitgeknipte figuren, verzwaard met lood en scharnieren bij de gewrichten, van beeld tot beeld met de hand werden gemanipuleerd en gefilmd via stopmotion fotografie. Reinigers personages worden omlijst door gedetailleerde achtergronden in verschillende lagen doorschijnend papier of kleurrijke acetaatfolies voor kleurenfilms. Haar uitzonderlijk talent, precisiewerk en vaardigheid wekken tot op vandaag indruk, net als haar uitgebreide filmografie die wel meer dan zestig films telt. In deze compilatie tonen we Reinigers interpretaties van klassieke mythen en sprookjes, een magische collectie van vertellingen van de Gebroeders Grimm, Wilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Andersen en de bundel volksverhalen Duizend-en-één-nacht.
 
Muziekstudenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen gaan de uitdaging aan om de fascinerende stille films van Lotte Reiniger te voorzien van een nieuwe, eigenzinnige soundtrack.

This film is silent.

German pioneer Lotte Reiniger is intrinsically connected to her innovative silhouette films, where paper and cardboard cut-out figures, weighted with lead and hinges at the joints, were manipulated from image to image by hand and filmed in stop motion photography. Reiniger’s characters are surrounded by detailed backgrounds in different layers of see-through paper or colourful acetate film for colour films. Her exceptional talent, precision work and craftmanship impress audiences and peers to this day, just like her extensive filmography, consisting of more than 60 films. In this compilation, we screen Reiniger’s interpretations of classical myths and fairy tales, a magical collection of tales from the Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Andersen and the folktales Arabian Nights.

Music students from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp embrace the challenge of composing a new, unique soundtrack to the fascinating silent films of Lotte Reiniger.
