Gepensioneerd koppel, Barkley en Lucy, hebben moeite om het hoofd boven water te houden tijdens de Grote Depressie. Wanneer hun huis in beslag genomen wordt, blijkt dat hun vijf volwassen kinderen zelf financiële problemen hebben. Zoon George en dochter Nellie kunnen elk een ouder in huis nemen, maar niemand heeft ruimte – of de intentie – om hen allebei onderdak te bieden. Voordat het koppel gedwongen afscheid neemt, spenderen ze een dag samen.

Regisseur Leo McCarey brengt de liefde die het koppel heeft voor elkaar met zo’n oprechte zorg naar voren als prachtige ode aan zijn overleden vader, zonder dat het verhaal te sentimenteel wordt. Het einde van de film is zo ontroerend mooi, dat fan van het eerste uur, Orson Welles, zei dat “the film would make a stone cry”. En Japans grootmeester Yasujirô Ozu baseerde zijn meest gevierde film TOKYO STORY (1953) op MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW.

Retired married couple Barkley and Lucy struggle through the Great Depression, losing their home to foreclosure. Their five grown children have their own financial problems, and although son George and daughter Nellie can each board one of their parents, none of the children can afford – or has the intention – to house them both. Before they are forced to split up, the couple take one last outing together as they ponder their futures.

Director Leo McCarey brings out the love the couple has for each other with such genuine care as a beautiful homage to his own father after his death, without the story becoming too sentimental. Then ending of the film is so movingly beautiful, that die hard fan Orson Welles said the “film would make a stone cry”. And Japanese master Yasujirô Ozu based his most celebrated film TOKYO STORY (1053) on MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW.

We screen the touching and timeless movie in collaboration with MAS, in connection with their COMPASSION expo (from the 31st of January until the 31st of August 2025).

Visitors with a ticket from a screening from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme will receive a reduction on a ticket for the MAS COMPASSION expo. Vice versa, a ticket of the MAS COMPASSION-expo (from the 31st of January until the screening day of the film in question) will entitle the visitor to a reduction ticket (€6,50 instead of €9) for a film from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme.
